14th October Knutsford 4 v Congelton Bears
The Bear Town boys were in town very promptly at 7:00, maybe expecting a long evening. The first match was indeed a long one, David O'Brien taking on a fellow leftie Alistair, and making the early running to take the first 9-4. Alistair equalised then David went ahead with a 9-0 score. Back came Alistair, with two 9-0 games to snatch the match. Unlucky David! Geoff at 1 played Lee in another see-saw encounter, 2-1 up after deploying the howitzer serve, but fading in the heat to lose 2-3. Fitness work required - maybe 'Walton's Workout' will help? Steve O'Hare at 2 played a fellow retriever Mick and played some excellent squash to get to 2-1 up, 9-0 in the third game no less! But Steve, suffering form a virus, couldn't keep up the pace and so a third match went to 3-2 to the Bears. Kynan Massey was getting a bit peckish so he didn't mess about, dispatching Tony ruthlessly 3-0 with some snappy squash. Finally Nick Johnson, after a long wait, took on Daddy Bear Rob, twice his height or so it looked. At one point Rob was heard to complain 'He's barging me out of the way' to general incredulity. But Rob served too tight and Nick had few chances to get his length, eventually losing 3-0. Match score 4-1 against. And so to the bar. The Bears really do like their evening out, and were still drinking merrily an hour later. By way of consolation, the faltering 4ths had 9 points in the bag. Well tried all!
