Congelton Bear Town 1 v Knutsford 4

The Vet Ian was on first against vet(eran)  Rob and a it was a real ding-dong, with Rob covering the court like an old geezer shouldn't. Ian took the first but then struggled with Rob's serves. Back and forth it went, but Ian had the legs to take the fifth 9-1. Sign of things to come...

Geoff at 5 played another youngster, Rob's son Matt. It were cruel but it had to be done. Up went the lob serve and after game 1 Matt was fit to explode. But he fought back to inch the second 10-8. Geoff didn't fancy five games on a hot court, so he bamboozled Matt in the fourth 9-1 to win 3-1.

Tony played the unorthodox left-hander Alistair and after the first two games we started thinking about nosh and pints, so easily did Tony work it. Assistant coach Roger advised Tony to 'give him a couple of points so he's had a game'. Fatal. Alistair got his serve going and fought back to 2-2, at which point Tony went back to Plan A and walked the fifth 9-1. Weird!

Dynamo Dave at 2 trained his howitzer on Mick, another unorthodox player who took the first before Dave had calibrated his serve. From then on Dave combined power with much improved drop shots to run out a comfortable 3-1 winner. That's more like it - well played Dave. Nosh and pints beckoned once again...

Until Roger and Lee got going that is. What a titanic encounter! As the clocked edge toward 11 o'clock they battled it out, 10-8 to Roger in the first, with some super retrieving from both players - particularly Roger's gets on the backhand wall. Eventually at 2-2 Roger tired just enough and Lee ran out the winner 3-2. Fantastic squash - well played Roger!

Overall a 4-1 win against a strong side, shape of things to come perhaps? And very nice nosh and pints too, at last!
