Alderley Edge 4 v Knutsford 4

7.30 came and went with no sign of our hosts - should we claim a walk-over? With hindsight, yes! When proceedings finally began the court was piping hot as Roger led off at 1 against Ben, and the ball was soon fizzing around. There was some super squash and long rallies, but it took Roger a while to get the hang of Ben's fast game and he went 2 down. The third was tight and Roger was unlucky to be pipped 10-9 for a 3-0 defeat. 'Playing for the team, Roger', said Tony...

... who at 3 faced a terrier-like opponent Richard who relished the fast court. It didn't suit Tony too much as the ball refused to die or nick or do anything useful! Again, fine squash but unusually for Tony some mistakes crept in and he also went down 3-0.

Next up was Richard at 2 making his debut against a powerful player Nick, and the ball was flying again. A real ding-dong battle this one, with some tremendous rallies. Richard took the first 9-5 only for Nick to respond with the same score. Richard 9-7 in the third: Nick 9-7 in the fourth, and so it went to 8-8 in the fifth - nail-biting stuff! Fortunately Richard kept his nerve and won 10-8 - super squash Richard! And some points on the board at last.

Meanwhile a second court came free (fortunately, as time was passing) and Ian was busy against the experienced Tim. I didn't see too much of it but by all accounts it was  close in each game, unfortunately each one going to Tim 9-6. Unlucky Ian!

No chance of a win then, and past 10 o'clock. Skippers on last, Geoff versus 'Iron Man' Alex. No chance of an early tea though as these two performed a Comedy of Errors to amuse the gallery, Geoff making comfortably more to lose 3-1, bringing our points total to a measly 4. Nice curry but a late finish!
