Knutsford 1 v Alsager 1

After a good telling off from the team manager for dropping points the previous week, knutsford 1 were all geared up to go against a strong alsager 1 team.  Runners up in div 3 last season they had turned down the opportunity to play in div 2.  Could we score a victory.

First up was risley against the ambidextrous Mick Broomhall.  This did not put the captain off and he started like a hare out of the blocks to take a comfortable 1-0 lead.  He, however succumbed to the recently crownedCheshirechampion 1-3.  Lets not mention it was the over 55s section!!

So, with only 1 point in the bag, up steps our no.1 Glen Faulkner against a very fit looking Ed Lockyer.  Glen starts off also like a hare and is 5-0 up in no time.  Ed, however, had more in his engine and managed to claw it back to a tie break.  With some hard drives and tight drops he had our man panting for breath and eventually took the first 10-8.  After starting like a hare our man finished the game akin to risley.....like a snail and went down 3-0.

So still only 1 point in the bag. Up steps the reliable Mr Burke against Richard Hallam.  Quite a ding-dong match this and was very close.  Our man was gradually getting whiter and whiter as he chased down every single ball from Signore Hallam.  A game to our man, a game to theirs, and vice versa.... eventuallyJohntook it in the last 9-3.  Never in doubt, and the first full points in the bag.

After our second team had demolished Macc 1 on the other court in a couple of hours we had 2 courts free.  So on step both Perry at 5 and Chris at 3.  Chris sporting a dashing t-shirt with Rocky blazened across the front.  Could he live up to it?  It didn't look good after he lost the first in a tie break against the wirey Mike Cole.  But he did live up to his t-shirt and fired up he buried the Alsagerian 3-1.  However, unbeknown to him Perry had pulled a calf muscle in the first on the other court and hobbled to a 3-0 defeat.  Looking very disconsolate in the bar afterwards, Perry could not be cheered up.

So a disappointing 7 points only against Alsager after such high hope.

The 'bad shirt' competition was a close run thing between Smithy and Faulkner.  Captain, however, sided with Smithy for the win.......

Best of luck next week.
